    Rocky Mountain national park boasts stunning mountain views, miles of hiking trails, and numerous backcountry campsites. For multi-day backpacking trips, a backcountry permit is required, and campsites must be reserved in advance. Use the button below to proceed; to view campsite availability, selecting a starting area is required, which can be located with this map's search tool. The search tool can also be used to locate your campsite by name!

  • Elevation Tool

    Taking elevation changes into account is an important part of planning backcountry hikes in the mountains. The elevation tool enables you to visualize elevation changes along any segment of trail (or other part of the map) you wish. To use:

    • Click the elevation tool to expand the widget and select 'New profile';
    • Single-click to add vertices along your intended route;
    • Double-click to add your final vertex and finalize the profile.
    • If you wish to change the units of measurement on your profile, click the vertical ellipsis.

    Note: the map is also enabled for 3d visualization of the terrain. To use this feature, select .

  • Report safety incidents

    Reporting safety incidents which occur in the backcountry will help others experience the park more safely in the future. Open the Editor tool and click New Feature to add a point to the map. The safety incident can be one of the following types:

    • Wildlife encounter
    • Avalanche
    • Lightning strike
    • River rescue
    • Other

    Enter one of those values in the first box, along with the date of the incident and a description for the map marker's popup window.
